For most of the 2010s, the bralette-style bikini top was the default. Soft cups, no boning, a relaxed fit that suited the decade's preference for undone, casual dressing. The underwire did not disappear entirely, but it retreated to the back of the rack. In 2025 and into 2026, it has been coming forward again. And the reasons are more interesting than a simple trend reversal.
Color trend reporting in fashion has a tendency to become self-referential very quickly. A color gets named, the name gets repeated, and by the time it reaches the consumer the original observation has been smoothed into something generic. Swimwear color is particularly susceptible to this because the category is so seasonal. There is a short window in which a color story is current, and the pressure to summarize it quickly produces a lot of vague language.
ECONYL and similar recycled nylon yarns became the standard answer to the sustainable swimwear question around 2018 and have remained there ever since. They are a genuine improvement over virgin nylon in terms of resource use, and the performance characteristics are now well understood. But a growing number of smaller brands and fabric developers are asking what comes after recycled nylon. And the answers are more varied than expected.
The cover-up is the most underwritten piece in beach fashion. It gets a paragraph in most swimwear features and then disappears. But for anyone spending time at a Japanese coastal resort. Where the distance between the beach and a restaurant or a shrine is often very short. The cover-up is doing a lot of work, and it is worth thinking about carefully.
